Hi, I'm Sara Lovell, the owner and artist behind Against The Grain Studio. I am a proud Charleston native and have lived here most of my life. I began working with furniture in 2015; it started as a creative outlet and an inexpensive way to furnish my home, then I realized I had a passion for it, and I enjoyed the process of refinishing, repairing, and restoring furniture. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a necessary side hustle that helped support my son and I through some challenging times. I really didn't know it at the time, but that's how Against the Grain was born, and since then it has become my full-time business. Although I had the good fortune of being mentored by some master carpenters and woodworkers in the area, I am mostly self-taught through research and a whole lot of trial & error. Beyond that, I have always been involved in creative pursuits and enjoy working with my hands.
My aim is to provide you with excellent service and high-quality pieces that will last for generations. I take pride in using an expert eye for creativity to help you hone yours. I will work collaboratively with you to ensure you end up with a piece of furniture that is one of a kind and designed specifically for you.
